  • Embed practice, capability and cultural shifts
  • Permanent position, based in Wellington

By joining us, you will be part of a team where meaningful work, collaboration and innovation come together to help keep New Zealand’s skies safe and secure.

At the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand, we are constantly evolving to meet the demands of a changing environment and the aviation industry.

Recent legislative changes, along with an organisational realignment, have opened exciting new opportunities across the Authority.  These changes are part of a broader effort to better position our teams for the future by enabling us to be more collaborative, efficient and effective in everything we do.

As we step confidently into our role as a modern regulator, we are embracing intelligence-led, risk-based approaches that help us make a real difference for our people and the communities we serve – with a strong value-for-money ethos. We’re also committed to enabling aviation participants to support economic growth in New Zealand's aviation sector.

About the Role

In response to recent changes at the Civil Aviation Authority, we have created a new General Manager, Certification and Monitoring role to lead our core regulatory aviation safety oversight function, and to drive organisational performance and improvement.

Reporting directly to the Deputy Chief Executive, Aviation Safety Oversight, and working in partnership with other leaders, you will be responsible for ensuring CAA delivers safety outcomes through an intelligence-led and risk-based approach to its oversight activities. You will have a critical leadership role in embedding organisational practice, capability and culture shifts which result in CAA being a timely and effective regulator, with a strong value-for-money ethos.

This requires an experienced senior operational leader of leaders who can retain a relentless focus on safety outcomes while being efficient and effective, and has a proven track record of developing

cohesive, engaged, and high performing teams.

The salary band for the General Manager, Certification and monitoring goes from $226,695 to $320,041 with the mid-range being $266,701. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader Authority for the same or similar roles.

What You’ll Bring

We are interested in hearing from senior leaders who are strategic thinkers with a strong relational focus and an ability to lead high performance and engagement in a challenging and ever-changing regulatory environment.

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate,

  • An exceptional senior operational leader of leaders who is adept at leading, coaching, mentoring and providing direction to enable an effective, results driven team.
  • Proven experience and understanding of the role and function of a regulatory agency. An aviation background and/or a strong understanding of aviation is preferable.
  • Proven strong relationship management and interpersonal skills that cultivate credibility and trust at all levels.
  • Strong problem solving, judgement and decision-making capability.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the machinery of government and government accountability processes.
  • Expertise in strategically leading modern regulatory safety practices and systems.
  • Relevant tertiary and/or aviation qualification.
