Chief Advisor, Aviation Security
Wellington, NZ, 6011
Lead with influence. Shape the strategy that keeps New Zealand’s skies secure.
Aviation security plays a vital role in protecting our people, our reputation, and our way of life. At the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand (CAA), we take that responsibility seriously — as the country’s aviation safety and security regulator, we ensure that every flight in and out of Aotearoa is safe, secure, and trusted.
We’re looking for a Chief Advisor to the Deputy Chief Executive – Aviation Security — a strategic partner and trusted leader who can help steer the future of aviation security in New Zealand.
This role is based in Wellington.
About the Role
You’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction and performance of the Aviation Security Group. As the DCE’s trusted advisor, you’ll provide high-level analysis, insight and advice on complex issues, ensuring that leadership decisions are well-informed and aligned with the organisation’s priorities.
You’ll act as a key liaison across the Civil Aviation Authority and with external partners — representing the DCE in strategic forums, leading cross-agency initiatives, and supporting the effective delivery of aviation security outcomes that protect New Zealand’s skies.
This is a diverse and influential role that requires political acumen, discretion, and the ability to operate confidently across organisational boundaries.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert, strategic advice to the DCE and Aviation Security Leadership Team.
- Lead or support projects, reviews, and change programmes across the Group.
- Represent the DCE in meetings, working groups, and cross-agency forums.
- Maintain oversight of key initiatives, identifying and mitigating risks.
- Develop high-quality briefings, communications, and governance material.
- Build strong relationships across CAA and with external stakeholders.
- Foster a collaborative, high-performing culture across the Group’s leadership team.
About You
This is a role for someone who thrives on influence— a trusted thinker, communicator, and relationship builder who can connect dots across a complex system.
You’ll bring a blend of strategic thinking, political awareness, and operational understanding. You’re comfortable navigating ambiguity and influencing at senior levels with confidence and credibility.
To succeed in this role, you’ll have:
- Proven experience delivering strategic, high-level advice within government or a regulatory environment.
- Strong understanding of public sector processes, governance, and regulatory practice.
- Exceptional communication, analysis, and relationship management skills.
- The ability to manage complex and sensitive issues with sound judgement and discretion.
- Experience leading or supporting major strategic or organisational initiatives.
- A collaborative leadership style and a commitment to integrity, inclusion, and public service.
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
The salary range for this role is from $160 911 to a maximum of $204 304. The starting salary will be dependent on your skills and experience and will take into account internal relativities within the team.
