About us
The EDDU unit was established in 1992 with one team and has grown from there. Our EDDU whanau is a small unit with a high standard of professionalism. Today, more than 30 operational dog teams are located at New Zealand's four main airports. They represent AvSec within the airport environment and public domain.

 

Our dog teams search for explosives within the airport environment and may also assist other government agencies with national security events or incidents. Our dog teams are mobile and react to any potential threat to national security; they can deploy at a moment's notice to any airport or location around New Zealand. Our teams are expected to maintain a high level of operational standard through regular training and assessments.

 

About the role

Our Trainers are responsible for delivering EDDU courses for both new and existing team members in conjunction with the National Manager Standards and Training. They are also responsible for undertaking regular assessments and developmental training of all operational EDDU team members and their AvSec dogs and puppies throughout New Zealand.  

 

Working as part of a team of officers, individuals must show excellent oral and written communication skills. Relationships with colleagues are critical to enhancing learning opportunities and providing a positive learning environment for staff. Candidates must be able to evidence these abilities.

 

The Trainer is required to manage an explosive detector dog at an operational level (although not required to maintain operational certification) or a detector dog in development, including puppies. 

 

About you
To be successful as an AvSec EDDU Trainer, you will have extensive proven experience training detector dog teams at all levels, including initial, continuation/developmental training and preferably puppy development. You will be: 

 

  • Hold Adult Education Certificate to NZQA level 4 or equivalent (or be able to attain within two years in the role).
  • Be presentable, articulate, engaging, confident, reliable, resilient and flexible.
  • Be calm under pressure and have excellent attention to detail. 
  • Hold or studying towards a relevant animal behaviour/training qualification.
  • Demonstrated ability as an operational working Dog Handler for a minimum of 5 years.
  • Demonstrated capability in the understanding of dog handling training principles.
  • Demonstrated ability at effectively mentoring and delivering quality training to others.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the overall care and management of working service dogs. 
  • Good understanding of aviation security passenger screening, baggage and cargo processes, systems and technology preferred. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook. 
  • Hold a full New Zealand driver's licence.
  • Committed to the principles of quality management and best practice.
  • Be a warranted Aviation Security Officer (or can qualify as one by sitting the AvSec Basic Training Course).

 

Pre-requisites
To be considered for a career with EDDU you;

  • Must be willing to have regular Covid-19 tests and continue to be fully-vaccinated for your own health; and the health, safety and wellbeing of colleagues, friends, family and the wider community.
  • Must be medically and physically fit and willing to undertake a medical assessment by a licensed aviation medical practitioner.
  • Must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must have a full clean New Zealand driver's licence.
  • Must be able to work rostered shift work, which may include weekends, nights, public holidays and afterhours callouts.
  • Must have a suitable, fully fenced property to home a dog within 50 minutes travel time of the base airport, and with off-street parking for a work vehicle.
