About the Aviation Security Service

There’s a good chance we've already met if you travel by air. The Aviation Security Service (Avsec) is the Government provider of aviation security in New Zealand, operating at our five major airports: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin.

Aviation security in New Zealand and around the world is changing – rapidly. The number of passengers and bags we screen every year is rising, and at the same time global security threats are changing and becoming more dynamic.

Our team is growing and the way we do our job is evolving. Our Aviation Security Officers are supported by a range of other team members – from Intelligence Analysts to IT and HR professionals, and business leaders. Ultimately our goal is to ensure the flying public are safe.

Utilising sophisticated explosive detection system equipment, we screen all checked passenger baggage at international airports and for some domestic flights for threat items. We ensure that prohibited items such as firearms, weapons, dangerous goods, explosives, or any other threat items are not carried onto aircraft.

We're responsible for pre-board screening of all departing international passengers and their carry-on baggage. We also screen departing domestic passengers and their carry-on baggage for some aircraft. For international flights we also ensure passengers do not take more than the allowed quantity of liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) into the cabins of aircraft.

Avsec has a large team nationwide to contribute to keeping New Zealand skies safe and secure. Our operational staff work shift work to ensure all flights are covered. We are a supportive, dedicated team that takes pride in what we do every day. We care for each person and plane that moves through airport security every day. It’s an awesome task and an awesome responsibility.
